The C.A.N – Updates

After a summer of construction, The C.A.N (Continuous Alert Nourishment) is ready to rock! We have shelves equipped with PVC pipes and dimmable LEDs,  a (no longer ‘somewhat iffy’) air exchange system1, a jimmy-rigged water setup2, enough hydroponic equipment and seeds to last a few months, and of course, lots of enthusiasm! It’s nearly -30°C outside, and the arugula, kale, romaine, mustard, basil, cilantro, and spinach all seem to be growing nicely! Fingers crossed that continues=)

We’ve had one harvest so far, where we got a whole milk crate of lettuce =) The joy felt delivering the crate to the kitchen reiterated that I have indeed found my ‘calling’;)

1 – The air exchange system is made up of an intake damper and an exhaust fan, both of which open for 5 minutes every morning. They are also hooked up to a thermostat which helps keep things consistent throughout the day (thank you B-Coolo).

2 – The water setup is not much of a setup… it’s just a big rain barrel that I hand bomb 11 buckets of tap water into every few weeks. We treat our tap water with chlorine, so I let it sit for a while before adding it to the growth systems.
